Earlier only saltwater stingrays could be seen in the Tropicarium but now visitors can get to know their relatives living in rivers. This species inhabits rivers in South America, mainly moving about on the riverbed, looking for food. It likes mussels, worms, shrimps and even fish. Its size can reach up to one meter and it can weigh 15 kg. Its name suggests that this animal also has a sting so it is no surprise that it can be extremely dangerous to humans as well. Some articles claim that the local inhabitants fear them more than the other dangerous species of the area, the piranha. |
