Sea Fish

In the room of sea fish you can encounter lots of colourful fish with curious shapes. This is one of the visitors' most favoured places.

Gudgeons can be found on all sorts of different floors, including muddy, gravely, sandy sea bottoms and among corals alike. Their representatives are spread from the polar circles to the Equator. Almost all gudgeons live near the sea bottom, except for the torpedo gudgeon, and they are shy fish.

Scorpion fish live in all the tropical seas. They are predators, feeding on fish. Length: 30-40 cm. They multiply through roes. The scorpion fish is closely related to the lionfish and so it has very powerful poison in its fins, which may be deadly even for humans. Their appearance perfectly resembles that of cliffs covered in algae, which is why you have to be very careful if you want to notice them. They are predators and when they are not too hungry, they practically wait for smaller fish to swim into their mouth and then they swallow them. In other cases they can push of from the bottom incredibly fast using their strong breast fins and catch their prey.

Orange clownfish
It lives in the subtropical seas of the Indo-Pacific region. Food: small shrimps. Length: 6-10 cm. We know of more than 20 different types of clownfish. A very special cohabitation has to be mentioned in connection with the clownfish. They live in symbiosis with the cnidarians (e.g. the snakelocks anemone). Cnidarians are not plants, they are animals. The two animals conduct chemical communication, which means that the snakelocks anemone recognises the fish that lives in it and its poison does not affect the fish. In return for the dwelling, the clownfish feeds its snakelocks anemone, sharing its own catch with the cnidarian. They mostly feed on sea invertebrates. Their reproduction is also interesting because in case the female of the family dies, it is not one of the younger females that takes up the role of the leading mother but the male that originally acted as the father. For this end, the male fish shifts its gender and from that moment on it lives its life as a female. The fish lay firey red roes generally in caves and guard them until the young fish swim away.

Moray eel of Java
Predators. Length: may reach up to 3 metres.
Moray eels are very special fish and not sea snakes. Moray eels are related to eels, which is indicated by their elongated shape. They are predators and very dangerous predators at that, even to humans. They spend most of their life hiding in rock cracks and holes, from where they watch and attack their prey, consisting mainly of smaller fish and crabs. They can be found in all the tropical seas.

Lionfish
Lionfish are famous for the fact that the effect of the poison they emit from their fins is very much like the burning feeling caused by fire. They are primarily only dangerous to divers because they may get frightened by the sharp pain and thus accidents can happen more easily. Other effects of the poison include inflammation and fever. These fish are also predators, feeding on sea invertebrates and smaller fish. The lionfish's breast fins drive the fish towards its mouth, which then suddenly opens and swallows the prey.
