Alligators

The Mississippi alligator is native to North America. It feeds on reptiles, birds and mammals. Its length may reach up to 5 metres. Reproduction: with eggs. It prefers swampy areas. Our alligators are fed with fish, chicken and rats. It is good to know that alligators are less dangerous to men than crocodiles, which cause far more accidents. Within the class of reptiles, alligators belong to the family of crocodylidae. Their body is covered with horn-scales, which have grown together and form hard armours to offer better protection. The eyes of alligators are protected by dual eyelids, the outer ones closing from top to bottom and serving the same purpose as ours. The inner eyelids are transparent and close from one side, protecting the animal's eyes under the water. The nostrils of the alligator can be closed, thus they can spend up to an hour underwater. Several quite large teeth can be found in their mouths, which serve to grab the food and are not suitable for chewing.

The family of crocodylidae includes crocodiles, alligators, caymans and gavials. The differences are apparent. The nose of the crocodile is narrower and longer than that of the alligator. There are distinctly visible notches on the upper jaw of the crocodile, where the canines of the lower jaw fit. This is less apparent in the case of alligators. Gavials are the most different from all, their noses being very long and narrow, with a large bulb at the end.
